Cargo insurance: limits and exclusions that catch drivers off guard
Updated October 2026
Cargo insurance protects you when the freight you haul is damaged, lost or stolen. But many cargo claims get reduced or denied because of limits and exclusions the driver never read.
What to check
Your limit: many brokers ask for $100,000, but high-value loads can be worth more. Check before you accept a load. Excluded commodities: some policies don't cover items like electronics, alcohol, tobacco or livestock. Unattended vehicle rules: theft from an unattended truck may not be covered unless certain conditions are met. Reefer breakdown: spoiled refrigerated loads usually need a separate endorsement. Deductible: know what you'll pay on every claim.
Protect yourself on every load
Note any damage on the bill of lading before you sign, take photos at pickup and delivery, keep seal numbers, and park in secure, well-lit places, especially with high-value freight.
