Why new CDL drivers struggle to get insured, and how to get past it
Updated October 2026
Many new CDL holders find that carriers want one or two years of experience before they'll hire them, and that buying their own truck right away means very high insurance prices. A big reason is insurance: insurers see newer drivers as higher risk.
How new drivers build experience
Start with a carrier that hires new drivers. Many large carriers and some regional fleets train and hire recent graduates, especially through company-sponsored programs. Keep a spotless record. Your first year of clean driving makes every future insurance quote cheaper. Get good training. Solid ELDT training and more behind-the-wheel practice can make you a stronger hire.
Before buying your own truck
Most owner-operators do better after a year or two of driving for someone else. You learn the business, build a record, and qualify for better insurance and financing prices.
