How to lower your truck insurance premium
Updated October 2026
Truck insurance prices vary widely. Two carriers with similar trucks can pay very different amounts, because insurers price based on risk. Here's what they look at, and what you can control.
What drives the price
Your years of CDL experience and your driving record. How long your authority has been active. What you haul and how far you run. Where your truck is based. The value of your truck. Your claims history and safety record, including inspection and crash data.
What you can do
Keep a clean record. Tickets, crashes and failed inspections all raise your price. Shop at least three quotes every renewal, and compare the same coverage limits and deductibles. Consider a higher deductible on physical damage, if you have savings to cover it. Pay in full if you can; installment plans often cost more. Ask about safety discounts for dash cameras, telematics or safety training. Stay with it. Prices often come down as your authority builds a clean track record.
Don't cut coverage you need
The cheapest policy isn't a deal if it doesn't meet your broker's requirements or leaves out coverage that one claim would make you wish you had. Compare quotes side by side, including limits and exclusions.
