What to do after a truck accident: protecting your claim
Updated October 2026
What you do in the first hour after a crash can decide how your claim goes. Keep this list in your cab.
At the scene
Make sure everyone is safe and call 911 if anyone is hurt. Turn on your flashers and set out your warning triangles. Call the police so there's a report. Take photos of all vehicles, the road, signs, weather and any cargo damage. Get names, phone numbers and insurance details from the other drivers, and contact information for witnesses. Don't argue about fault or admit blame; stick to the facts.
Right after
Notify your carrier or dispatcher and your insurance agent as soon as you can. Follow drug and alcohol testing rules if they apply to the crash. Write down everything you remember while it's fresh. Save dash camera footage and your ELD data.
During the claim
Answer your insurer's questions promptly, keep copies of every repair estimate and receipt, and keep a log of calls. If you're hurt, follow your doctor's instructions and keep your records.
